40 minutes from Milazzo, Tindari is located on a promontory overlooking the “Marinello lakes nature reserve”. Founded by Dionysius I of Syracuse in 396 BC it suffered the consequences of various conflicts and bad weather, including two major earthquakes which survived the Sanctuary of Tindari dedicated to the Black Madonna, considered by Catholics as the bringer of graces and miracles.
The ruins of the ancient city can be visited and are located within the archaeological area. Inside the area there is also the Greek Theater dating back to the 4th century. BC, later remodeled also by the Romans.
