Taormina

Approximately 1h from Milazzo, Taormina is one of the most important and well-known tourist centers in Sicily and was an important destination of the Grand Tour. The origins of this city are still uncertain but it is thought that it was named after the place on which rises, Monte Tauro, where the Castle of Taormina is located. Corso Umberto is the main street that runs through the entire city center, dotted with clubs, luxury boutiques, jewelers, clothing and souvenir shops; all framed by splendid monuments and panoramic points, such as Piazza IX Aprile overlooking the bay below with a view of Etna mount.

Walking on the main street, you also come across the Cathedral of Taormina, built in the XIII century and which has a medieval facade with a door in typical Baroque style. A few steps from the Main Street we also find the municipal park with its immense public gardens. The villa was owned by a rich English woman who loved birds, in fact around the gardens it is possible to see numerous mangers and nest boxes. It is the ideal place to enjoy a magnificent view in the shelter of countless trees and flower beds.

The most famous monument of Taormina is certainly the Greek Theater, dating back to the III century. B.C. and which today hosts various concerts (including international ones), theatrical performances and events, such as the main G7 parade which was held in 2017.

A fundamental stop is Isola Bella, a small island with crystal clear waters located at the foot of the city. You cannot miss a visit to Castelmola, a small medieval village 5km from Taormina known for the ruins of the castle and for its enchanting narrow streets.
